Thirty years ago, New Order were taking their first faltering steps as a band. Originally, of course, they were Joy Division, whose career was halted by the suicide of singer Ian Curtis in May 1980. The rest of the group carried on, adding keyboard player Gillian Gilbert to the line-up and promoting guitarist Bernard Sumner to vocal duties.
Now, as the reformed band (minus bassist Peter Hook) tour the UK, author Dec Hickey has published a new book on the band.
From Heaven to Heaven follows New Order, with just a dozen or so performances to their name, on a three and a half year journey through all their British gigs between early 1981 and June 1984. Besides the band and their crew, Hickey was the only person present at every one of these gigs, and armed often with a camera and rarely without a tape machine or a group of friends/other New Order fans. The book recounts capturing the band on this road trip...
