Review: New Order @ Summer Pops, Liverpool
« Antwort #31 am: 12. Juli 2006, 18:02:56 »
New Order
Stephen Dalton at Summer Pops, Liverpool

New Order shows used to be magical, chaotic or even comically awful affairs. But since these Mancunian post-punk legends patched up their decade-long feud and re-formed in the late 1990s, they are no longer a band of such wild extremes. Concerts now follow a steady middle path. Something has been lost in this evolution, but something gained too.

The black-clad quartet played a hearty show in Liverpool, punctuating 25 years of New Order tracks with Joy Division classics. Having spent two decades virtually ignoring their previous incarnation as overlords of late 1970s psychodrama, the surviving members began reviving songs from their past life after their reconciliation. Joy Division songs bookended the set, beginning with a clumsy Love Will Tear us Apart and closing on a sluggish Shadowplay. In between, however, were passionate, punchy readings of 24 Hours, Transmission and more.

Once notorious for playing in a state of severe inebriation while oozing sarcastic disdain for their music and each other, New Order now radiate a mixture of midlife contentment and sober camaraderie. The bass guitarist Peter Hook may have defied his cuddly granddad appearance by berating the overzealous Liverpool security staff from the stage several times, but he still spent much of the show with a wide grin on his face. Meanwhile, the band’s perennially boyish singer and guitarist Bernard Sumner pointed out his favourite tracks with unforced enthusiasm.

Not even the most charitable fan could argue that the two guitar-heavy albums New Order have released since the millennium come close to matching their 1980s peaks. Newer tunes such as Turn and Working Overtime certainly felt like trundling, stodgy makeweights. However, the recent tracks Krafty and Waiting for the Sirens’ Call are beginning to sound like worthy additions to the pantheon.

Saturday’s highlights were firmly rooted in the band’s 1980s heyday as pioneers of electronic rock. The synthesizer symphony Your Silent Face became a huge terrace singalong while the throbbing stadium disco anthems Bizarre Love Triangle and Temptation had most of the crowd on their feet. New Order still command one of the most epic back catalogues in pop.

New Order, Liverpool Summer Pops
Jul 10 2006
By Mike Chapple, Daily Post

TOO many Manchester United fans made it down the M62 for New Order's Summer Pops debut on Saturday night.

That apart, this was an awesome performance which like that one other great coup of a signing for the Pops, The Who, went down in similarly euphoric fashion with a rabid audience.

Backed by a stunning strobe lighting system, this was a gig to qualify their entry into the pantheon of truly great bands.

Opening with such a rumbling giant as Love Will Tear Us Apart, Sumner, Hook, Morris and Gillian Gilbert's replacement Phil Cunningham, could hardly go wrong. Indeed, Cunningham has added an extra cutting edge to the Order with the ability to switch effortlessly from synth to guitar when the occasion warranted.

With Hookie wielding his bass like a grenade launcher and issuing threats to the security staff, they whipped the audience into a frenzy with ravishing dips into the back catalogue of both Joy Division and the Order.

This combination reached its zenith when the hard core guitar aggression of Transmission ended with Sumner announcing "we're gonna slow down a bit now, we're getting on a bit," before slipping into the sublime synthesised melancholy of Your Silent Face from the 1983 album Power Corruption and Lies. It flowed through the tent like the Mersey at high tide and set the pace for the final run-in of big guns.

It was mega Manc stuff and we the people of Liverpool, for once, salute you.
